The lake trout catch in the 1998 assessment was just within the normal range for lakes of this class, and was similar to past mid-summer catches in this lake. Jim Lake is a very marginal lake trout lake, and probably supports only a small number of fish. The lake also supports a high-density white sucker population, and high numbers of fathead minnow and dace.

Lake trout were relatively abundant, and were present in a wide range of sizes. Growth was slow among small lake trout, but appeared to improve in older fish. The lake trout population was probably native - the only recorded stocking had been done in 1977, and lake trout were collected prior to that time. White sucker were very abundant, but generally small. They may have been providing some forage for lake trout. The Jim Lake lake trout population could be very vulnerable to overharvest due to the small size of the lake, and the marginal conditions under which lake trout in the lake survive. Anglers fishing the lake should limit their harvest of adult fish, and any measures aimed at improving access to this lake should be opposed, due to this vulnerability.

THE LAKE TROUT POPULATION IS DESTINCTLY MARGINAL. ONLY ONE AGE-CLASS (5+) WAS CAPTURED, ALTHOUGH THESE FISH DID SHOW GOOD GROWTH. SINCE LAKE TROUT HAVE ONLY BEEN STOCKED IN JIM LAKE ONCE (1977), IT IS ASSUMED THAT THIS IS A NATURALLY REPRODUCING STOCK. THE LACK OF ANY DIVERSITY IN AGE-CLASS STRUCTURE MAKES THE POPULATION EXTREMELY SUSCEPT- IBLE.
