Mulligan Lake supported a very low number of brook trout in 2004. An increase in stocking frequency (to annual stocking) did not result in an increase in brook trout abundance. It appeared that survival of fish from the last three stockings had been very low. Northern pike were found in Mulligan Lake for the first time in this assessment. Northern pike prey heavily on stocked trout, and if they have become established in this lake, management for stream trout may no longer be possible.White sucker were captured in moderate numbers. No green sunfish were found, but they have been taken in this lake in the past.

Mulligan Lake supported a moderate number of brook trout in 1997, with a good proportion over 12 inches in length. Fish from the 1996 and 1994 stockings were found, but growth rates were relatively slow. White sucker and green sunfish were also found, but not in excessive numbers for a lake of this type. Even-year-only stocking prior to 1997 had resulted in the best fishing opportunities occurring in a cyclic manner (fall of odd years and spring of even years). A switch to annual stocking of this lake was recommended, to create a population which could provide two or more catchable-size year classes on a more regular basis.

Brook trout were abundant, and fish up to 15 inches were collected. All the brook trout collected were from the 1992 and 1990 stockings. Slow growth and limited survival past age 3 make it unlikely that Mulligan Lake would produce many trophy-sized brook trout.
