Big Snow Lake is a remote lake in the Superior National Forest located 16 miles NNW of Tofte, MN. Access to the lake is difficult, 1.25 miles on a rough logging road; then 0.25 mile on an unmarked trail over uneven ground. Travel on the logging road should be limited to high clearance four-wheel drive vehicles. Travel in early spring when the ground is soft can be a problem. The northern pike catch in 2006 was in the low end of the normal range for the lake class, but was similar to the previous survey completed in 1986. The average weight of northern pike sampled was 2.4 pounds. Northern pike ranged from 18 to 27 inches in this assessment. Growth was average when compared to other northern pike lakes in the area; five-year old northern pike averaged 22.6 inches at last annulus formation. Yellow perch were sampled in average numbers for this lake class, but the size was small, averaging 0.1 pounds. Yellow perch ranged from 6 to 7.5 inches in the sample.
