Ryan Lake is an 18.8-acre, class 30 lake located within the Brooklyn Center, Robbinsdale, and Minneapolis City boundaries. Ryan Lake is mostly surrounded by residential and commercial property, the city of Minneapolis owns approximately 425 feet of shoreline on the east side (Xerxes Ave. N and 47th Ave N), where they have installed a dock for viewing wildlife and fishing. A population assessment on Ryan Lake was conducted to collect information about the fish community and water quality to investigate opportunities to expand fishing and community stewardship. The assessment indicated that there was an above average number of northern pike, with normal growth. The average northern pike length was 20 inches, with weights ranging from 0.7 to 3.0 pounds. Bluegill sunfish was the most abundant species in the survey, the average length was 5.7 inches, and the largest bluegill sampled was 8 inches in length. Black crappie numbers were above average for this lake type, and 62% of the crappies captured were 7 inches or greater; the largest black crappie measured 8.5 inches in length. Yellow perch were sampled in numbers above average for a lake of this class; the average yellow perch length was 8.5 inches. Three largemouth bass were captured during the survey, the largest of which was 12.7 inches. Black bullheads sampled had an average length of 7.8 inches; black bullhead numbers were above average for this lake type. Other fish species captured during the survey were brown bullheads, bowfin, common carp, green sunfish, and hybrid sunfish. The variety of fish species along with the ample numbers in Ryan Lake provides anglers with a unique metro opportunity to catch different species and sizes of fish. Anglers both of all ages can appreciate Ryan Lake for sport fishing or frying pan potential.
