Prairie Lake is a 1,064-acre lake about four miles north of Grand Rapids in the Mississippi River watershed. Most of the lake (about 80%) is less than 15 feet deep, so fish have a lot of nearshore habitat to use. The deepest spot is 31 feet. Water clarity in summer usually ranges from about 3 to 7 feet, and the water often has a dark, bog-stained color. The Prairie River runs through two main basins (an upper/main basin and Lower Prairie). A small hydroelectric dam at the outlet blocks fish movement. The shoreline is mostly privately owned with moderate development. There are two public boat accesses: one on the northwest side of the main basin and one on the south shore of Lower Prairie. According to the 2023 Fisheries Lake Management Plan, Black Crappie are the main management species, with Walleye, Northern Pike, Bluegill, and bass as secondary species. Walleye are stocked annually with fry. A special gill-net survey was done in late June to check on Walleye stocking success and see how the lake is meeting management goals. Black Crappie numbers are strong. The gill net catch was above the management goal and similar to past surveys. Most fish were on the smaller side, ranging from 4.5 to 10.6 inches, with an average of 6.9 inches. There are decent numbers of keeper-size fish around 8 inches, but relatively few fish over 10 inches. For anglers, that means steady action and good numbers, but limited trophy potential right now. Walleye numbers remain low. The survey catch was well below the goal even though fry have been stocked every year since 2021. Only seven Walleye were caught, ranging from 11.7 to 25.2 inches. Prairie Lake is not naturally suited to produce high Walleye numbers. High Northern Pike abundance plus low Yellow Perch numbers likely make it harder for Walleye to thrive. Anglers may encounter an occasional quality fish, but Walleye fishing is expected to be inconsistent. Northern Pike numbers have been increasing. Pike were sampled at the highest rate ever observed in this lake and above the management goal. Most fish were between 13.5 and 29 inches, averaging 22 inches. However, size structure is skewed toward smaller fish, with very few pike over 28 inches. About 35% of sampled pike fell within the north-central zone protected slot limit. Pike grow at a normal rate for Minnesota waters, reaching 21 inches by about age 4. For anglers, expect good action and plenty of pike, but limited numbers of large fish. Yellow Perch numbers improved compared to the last survey and were close to average for similar lakes. However, most perch were small (average 5.9 inches), so they are unlikely to provide much angler interest at this time. Other species present include Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, Rock Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Bowfin, bullheads, suckers, shiners, and redhorse. Overall, Prairie Lake offers consistent panfish and pike action, modest crappie size, and limited but possible Walleye opportunities.

A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in Prairie Lake was conducted on June 10th - 20th, 2024 by Index of Biological Integrity (IBI) Program Staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible. Backpack electrofishing was completed at all 18 sampling stations. Similarly, a 50-foot seine was used to sample six stations, a 15-foot seine was used at eight stations, and site conditions prevented the use of seines at four stations. Nearshore sampling captured 15 species of fish including three species that are intolerant of disturbance (i.e., Blackchin Shiner, Burbot, and Rock Bass) and one that is tolerant of disturbance (i.e., Fathead Minnow). A concurrent summer trap net survey was beginning on June 10th, 2024 by IBI Program Staff. Fifteen trap nets were set along the shoreline in locations that encompassed multiple habitat types. Bluegill, Brown Bullhead, and Black Crappie comprised a majority of the trap net catch by number, while Bowfin and Golden Redhorse comprised a majority of the catch by biomass. The number of Bluegill sampled per net was above the 50% quartile for similar Lake Class 35 lakes. However, the mean weight of Bluegill sampled was below the 25% quartile for Lake Class 35 lakes. The nearshore and trap net data were combined with gill net data from a July 2022 survey to describe the fish community and provide a Fish-based IBI (FIBI) score. The FIBI uses fish community data to measure a lake's health, and the types of fish species present can help identify any stressors that may be negatively affecting the lake environment. In Minnesota lakes, certain fish species cannot survive without clean water and a healthy habitat (e.g., Burbot, Rock Bass, and Smallmouth Bass), while other species are tolerant of degraded conditions (e.g., Fathead Minnow and Green Sunfish). The FIBI score, composed of several fish community diversity and composition metrics, indicates the overall health of a lake by comparing it to what is expected for a healthy lake. An additional survey was completed on Prairie Lake in July 2012 resulting in a similar FIBI score. For additional information on the FIBI, search for "lake index of biological integrity" on the mndnr.gov website. Results from this survey provide evidence that the fish community in Prairie Lake is healthy as indicated by an FIBI score above the general use impairment threshold for aquatic life use determined for similar lakes. These results are similar to previous findings which indicated that Prairie Lake is fully supporting aquatic life. Data from this survey will contribute biological information about the health of the fish community to the Mississippi River - Grand Rapids Watershed assessment process in coordination with MN Pollution Control Agency. You can help protect the fish community in Lake Name by reducing runoff, maintaining natural shorelines, and preventing the spread of invasive species.

Prairie Lake was included in an initial statewide research project investigating Black Crappie age and growth from populations with distinct growth and size structure characteristics. Spring surveys were preferred with water temperatures between upper-40s to mid-50s. Non-standard day electrofishing was conducted four times; yielding 44 Black Crappie at a rate of 11.7/hr of on-time electrofishing (with two sampling events failing to capture any Black Crappie). The sample size was small for the project but was still useful. Length, sex/maturity, and ageing structures (otolith and scales) were collected from all crappie sampled. Black Crappie ranged from 6.7 to 10.7 inches with an average length of 8.4 inches. The 2022 gill net only survey was comparable with lengths from 4.1 to 10.7 inches with an average length of 7.0 inches (n=208). Size structure was characterized by numerous small fish. Sex and maturity determination indicated 66% of the sample were mature male (n=29). Females ranged from 7.5 to 10.7 inches with an average length of 8.7 inches, similarly males ranged from 6.7 to 9.6 inches with an average length of 8.3 inches. Multiple age classes were present and growth was slow, similar to past surveys.
