Witness Lake is located approximately 16 miles NE of Ely, MN and is entirely within the BWCAW. It has a surface area of 42 acres and a maximum depth of 20 ft. Water clarity is considered good. Access is by a discrete 90 rod portage from Washte Lake. There are no designated campsites on the lake. Yellow perch numbers in 2012 (73.0/gill net) were similar to the long term average for all assessments on this lake. Perch sizes averaged 7.4" and the largest perch sampled was 11.9". Walleye numbers in 2012 (9.0/gill net) were lower than the long term average for all assessments on this lake. Walleye sizes averaged 18.2" or about 3 years old. This growth rate is much faster than average compared to similar lakes. The largest walleye sampled was 24.8". Several larger male walleyes were 17 years old. Walleye were last stocked in 1985.
