Wampus Lake is a shallow, landlocked, moderately hardwater lake, lying in the south-central portion of the Kawishiwi River Watershed. It has a total area of 139 acres, a maximum depth of 6 feet, and a median depth of about 3 feet. The shoal water soils consist of about 65% muck, 25% muck over boulder and gravel, and 10% mixed sand, gravel and boulder.Emergent aquatic vegetation was scattered along the shoreline, and submerged aquatic vegetation was abundant in the south portion of the lake and scattered elsewhere.A secchi reading of 6 feet (bottom) indicated that the lake water was clear. No fish were taken in 5 trap net sets. Minnows, Iowa Darters and Brook Sticklebacks were taken by shoal water seining. The overall shallowness of the lake, the abundance of the aquatic vegetation, and the absence of gamefish indicate that Wampus Lake probably winterkills.
