Todd is a small lake (214 acres) located north of the City of Hutchinson in McLeod County. It has approximately three miles of shoreline and much of the lake is four to six foot deep, with a maximum depth of nine feet, during high water. There is a public boat access with a cement plank ramp at the south end of the lake. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) has divided Minnesota's lakes into 44 different classes based on physical and chemical characteristics. Todd is a class 43 lake and other similar waterbodies in the Hutchinson Fisheries Management Area are Swan and Hook Lake in McLeod County. Todd Lake occasionally suffers partial winterkills of fish during harsh winters. Fish populations can fluctuate widely depending on severity and frequency of winterkill. However, milder winters in recent decades, with decreased winterkill frequency and severity, has led to increased boom-and-bust angling opportunities at this lake. Todd was formerly managed as a Walleye rearing pond but was switched to a recreational fishing lake in 2025. Curlyleaf pondweed can reach nuisance levels in May and June at this lake. The water is occasionally clear enough to spear Northern Pike in the winter. Panfish are currently the best option for anglers looking to fish Todd Lake. Bluegill Abundance was good during the last June trap net survey. While not many large fish were sampled, over forty percent of Bluegill sampled were over seven inches. Anglers may have to sort through their catch to find a meal. Some Black Crappie were sampled during the survey. These fish were mostly small. They will likely need some time before being targeted. One benefit of a shallow basin like Todd Lake is that absent winterkill species such as Bluegill and Black Crappie can grow very fast and the fishery can rapidly develop. Some Northern Pike were sampled, but most of these were fairly small. Only two pike larger than 17 inches were sampled, but one was 31 inches. Like the crappie, these pike can grow quickly to a size preferred by anglers. Additional fish species captured included Black Bullhead, Common Carp, Golden Shiner, Hybrid Sunfish, Pumpkinseed, Yellow Bullhead and Yellow Perch . People can have significant impacts on lakes and the fish populations they support. Over harvest, lakeshore development, removal of shoreline vegetation, and introductions of invasive species can all adversely affect fish populations. Aquatic invasive species (AIS) are typically moved from infested to non-infested waters by anglers, boaters and lakeshore owners, and can adversely impact lakes and fish populations. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants and animals from their watercraft and drain all lake water from their boat and bait buckets before leaving the lake. If you suspect an infestation of an invasive species in this lake, save a specimen and report it to a local DNR office. Additional information on all these topics can be found on the MNDNR website (www.dnr.state.mn.us) or by contacting the Hutchinson Area Fisheries office.
