Lake Alott is a 46-acre land-locked lake entirely within the Camp RipleyMilitary Reservation. Fish species are not as varied as other lakes, but goodangling opportunities exist. Species that could interest an angler includemuskellunge, walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, andpumpkinseed. A creel survey has been ongoing since 1991 using postcards providedto anglers requesting access to the lake. Annual walleye stocking provides afishery with a wide range of sizes and weights. However, creel data showed thatnorthern pike were the most commonly caught gamefish. Northern pike over 24 incheswere common in the assessment, while some anglers report catching pike over 36inches in past years. Although no muskies were caught in this assessment, fishexceeding 40 inches have been reported. A catch and release policy for muskie wasadopted by the Camp Commander in 1991 to protect the fishery. Muskie stocking anduse as brood fish lake was terminated in 1991. Both species of bass are presentin the lake, however, evaluation of the populations is difficult with standard lakesurvey gear. While most fishermen chose to pursue the larger gamefish in the lake,an excellent pumpkinseed population does exist. Sunfish up to eight inches weresampled in the assessment and fish over six inches are common. Yellow perch, white suckers, and black bullheads are also present.

THE LARGEMOUTH BASS POPULATION REMAINS ABOVE AVER- AGE WITH A WIDE RANGE OF SIZES. PUMPKINSEED SUN- FISH NUMBERS ARE 17 TIMES THE AVERAGE AND ARE ABOVE AVERAGE IN SIZE. THE WALLEYE POPULATION HAS DECREASED SINCE THE LAST SURVEY AND IS BELOW THE STATE AVERAGE. NORTHERN PIKE ARE SMALL AND THE POPULATION IS AT THE STATE AVERAGE. MUSKELLUNGE OF THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER STRAIN HAVE BEEN STOCKED SINCE 1986. WHITE SUCKERS AND A BURBOT WERE PRE- SENT IN SPRING MUSKIE AND NORTHERN PIKE NETTING OPERATIONS. THE YELLOW PERCH POPULATION IS ABUNDANT AND SHOWS UP VERY WELL IN THE 1/4 NET AND 50' AND 400' NRC SEINE HAULS.

LARGEMOUTH BASS POPULATION REMAINS ABOVE AVG BUT PROBABLY NOT AS HIGH AS IN 1955 PRIOR TO THE NORTHERN PIKE INTRODUCTIONS. NORTHERN PIKE WERE INTRODUCED AFTER THE LAST SURVEY, THEIR NUMBERS ARE FAIRLY HIGH AND SIZE IS SMALL. THEY ARE REPRO- DUCING WELL. YELLOW PERCH HAVE GONE FROM ABUNDANT TO AVERAGE (162 TO 19 PER GILLNET LIFT.) WALLEYE NUMBERS REMAIN UNCHANGED. BUT THE AVG SIZE HAS INCREASED 50% AND THE RANGE OF SIZED CAUGHT IS MUCH GREATER. TRAPNET CATCHES OF WALLEYES WERE SIGNIFICANT IN THIS SURVEY. PUMPKINSEEDS ARE THE ONLY SUNFISH PRESENT. THEY ARE 3 TIMES THE STATE AVG NUMBER AND 5 TIMES THE STATE AVERAGE SIZE, BUT THIS IS ABOUT 1/4 THE NUMBER PER TRAPNET LIFT IN 1955.
