This targeted survey was completed to provide baseline data describing the fish community of Baby Lake for MN DNR Division of Parks and Trails staff. Baby Lake is a small (approximately 10 acres), isolated basin located within Glacial Lakes State Park. This basin is relatively shallow with an estimated maximum depth of approximately 14.0 feet. In recent years it has become a popular destination for backpack campers and walk-in shore anglers targeting Walleyes. Because it lies entirely within state park boundaries, a fishing license is not required to fish this basin. Survey results from 2015 describe a relatively simple fish community consisting of Black Bullheads, Blacknose Shiners, Fathead Minnows, Golden Shiners, and Walleyes. Five Walleyes, ranging in length from 12.5 to 25.6 inches, were collected during this survey. Younger, smaller fish comprise the majority of this population but a few older, larger fish are present. Presence of Walleye is due to previous use of this basin as a Walleye rearing pond throughout the 1990s by MN DNR Section of Fisheries. Walleye rearing was discontinued in 2000 but apparent lack of winterkill and natural reproduction has sustained this population, which now provides unique walk-in angling opportunities for park users.
