North Hegman Lake is located approximately 10 miles N of Ely and is entirely within the BWCAW. This lake is characterized by it's rocky shoreline with spruce bog bays and coniferous forests. There are pictographs located on the north end of the lake that are very popular with visitors to the area. The most common access is by a short (5 rod) portage from South Hegman Lake. There are no designated campsites located on the lake. Fish sampling during the 2014 population assessment indicated low relative abundances of northern pike (45%), smallmouth bass (30%), walleye (15%), pumpkinseed (5%) and white sucker(5%). Largemouth bass were observed but not sampled. Northern pike numbers in 2014 (1.5/gill net) were similar to the long term average for all assessments on this lake. The average pike sampled was 25.8 inches long and the largest pike sampled was 28.7 inches. Smallmouth bass numbers in 2014 (1.0/gill net) were higher than the long term average for all assessments on this lake. The average smallmouth sampled was 11.2 inches long and about 5 years old. The largest smallmouth sampled was 16.6 inches. Walleye numbers in 2014 (0.5/gill net) were similar to the long term average for all assessments on this lake. The average walleye sampled was 20.4 inches long and about 4 years old. The largest walleye sampled was 20.7 inches.
