Shelter Lake is located about 10 miles north of Duluth, south of the eastern basin of Island Reservoir. Shelter Lake is 11 acres, is in lake class 10, and has a maximum depth of 35 feet. Shelter Lake is currently not actively managed for sport fisheries but was used as a walleye rearing pond in 2000 and 2001, with 55,000 fry stocked. Very few fish were recaptured in the fall and its potential as a walleye rearing pond is low. Results from the 2001 lake survey indicate a population composed of walleye (age 1 from our stocking), white sucker, black bullhead, and tadpole madtom.
