Battle Lake is located approximately 12 miles NW of Ely and is entirely within the BWCAW. It has a surface area of 75 acres and a maximum depth of 22 feet. Access is by portage from Phantom Lake (32 rods) or Hassel Lake (140 rods). There is one designated USFS campsite located on the lake. Walleye numbers in 2013 (3.0/gill net) were below average compared to similar lakes in this class. The average walleye sampled was 18 inches long and about 9 years old. The largest walleye sampled was 21.5 inches long. Northern pike numbers in 2013 (4.7/gill net) were near average compared to similar lakes in this class. The average pike sampled was 20 inches long and about 5 to 6 years old. The largest pike sampled was almost 30 inches long. Bluegill and white sucker were also sampled in the gill nets in realtively low numbers. Yellow perch and largemouth bass remains were identified in walleye stomach samples. Adult largemouth bass were observed near shore.
