Schielin is a 19 acre lake with 97% littoral area and a maximum depth of 17 feet. The lake is located near Independence, MN and has no public access. Prior to this survey, Schielin had never been surveyed by DNR Fisheries. Schielin was surveyed during the summer of 2016 to gather baseline information about fish populations and aquatic habitat. Northern Pike abundance of 3.0 per gillnet lift was average compared to other similar Minnesota lakes. Average length of gillnet captured Northern Pike was 23.6 inches, with some quality size fish sampled up to nearly 30 inches. Black Crappie are scarce but large in Schielin Lake. Black Crappie abundance of 2.5 per trapnet lift was below average compared to other similar Minnesota lakes. Average length of Black Crappie was 11.4 inches. One specimen captured exceeded 14 inches in length. Only two year-classes were present suggesting inconsistent reproduction. Yellow Perch are abundant but small in Schielin Lake. Yellow Perch abundance of 29.0 per gillnet lift is above average compared to other similar Minnesota Lakes. Average length of Yellow Perch was 6.9 inches, with only 8% exceeding eight inches and none exceeding nine inches.
