Net Lake is a 79 acre, shallow, bog-stained lake located within Voyageurs National Park. The lake has a maximum depth of 18 feet and its water chemistry is typical of infertile lakes located on the Canadian shield. Access to Net Lake is via a short portage trail, with trailhead at the southern tip of Junction Bay of Namakan Lake. The Park does not maintain a boat or campsite on Net Lake. As indicated by the 2006 investigation, the fish community of Net Lake consists of relatively few species. The primary predator in the system is northern pike. Pike abundance in 2006 (12.33/net) was high relative to other lakes in the same Classification and greatly exceeded abundance found in 1973 (6.34/net), the only previous fish survey of Net. Most of the pike collected in the 2006 investigation were small. Lengths ranged from 12.4 to 28.8 inches with an average of 19.9 inches. Aging indicated that growth rates of pike are slow and that mortality rates were high. Yellow perch made up 28% of the total fish catch from Net Lake in 2006. Yellow perch abundance (7.33/net) was typical of lakes in the same Classification. The yellow perch abundance in 1973 was (27.17/net). Most of the perch collected in 2006 were small (5 to 7 inches in length). However, a few perch up to 12.5 inches were present. Yellow perch growth in Net Lake was slow. Other species present in Net Lake included black bullhead, pumpkinseed, white sucker, blacknose shiner, fathead minnow and golden shiner. Several large snapping turtles were also captured and released during this investigation.
