Long is a 478 acre, class 11 lake located approximately 10 miles west of Crane Lake, MN. Maximum depth is approximately 18 feet. Walleye fry were introduced in 1958 and 1959. These two stocking events were successful in establishing a self-sustaining walleye population. No other stocking has been done since that time. Walleye abundance was above average for this lake type. Mean length was 15.95 inches with a range of 8.9 to 25.7. Many year-classes were present and Walleye from 1-18 years were aged, this should provide consistent reproduction and recruitment for the future. The Walleye growth rate was much greater than the area mean. The mean weight was 1.30 pounds, which was within the typical range for class 11 lakes. Northern Pike abundance was within the typical range for this lake type. In 2021, length ranged from 19.5 to 33.5 inches and the mean was 23.2. The mean weight was 2.72 pounds, which was above the average for lake class 11. Yellow Perch abundance was well above the typical range for this lake type. Sizes attractive to anglers were present, but many perch were small and are important as forage for predators. Mean length was 6.8 inches with a range from 5.2 to 11.9.

These two stocking events were successful in establishing a self-sustaining walleye population. No other stocking has been done since that time. Northern Pike abundance was within typical range for this lake type. However, abundance was above levels seen in the three previous investigations. In 2013, length in the sample ranged from 21.7 to 33.1 inches and the mean was 25.0. The mean weight was 3.57 pounds, which was above the typical range for this lake class 11. Walleye abundance was above the typical range for this lake type. Mean length was 14.9 inches with a range from 8.9 to 25.7. Many year-classes were present and age ranged from 1-16 years, which should provide consistent recruitment in the near future. Growth rate was much greater than the area mean. The mean weight was 1.39 pounds, which was within the typical range for class 11 lakes. Yellow Perch abundance was well above the typical range for this lake type. Sizes attractive to anglers were present, but many perch were small and are important as forage for predators. Mean length was 7.1 inches with a range from 5.2 to 11.7. Growth was greater than the area mean. Nine year-classes were present and age ranged from 2-10. When combined, age-2 and age-3 fish represented 91 percent of sample.
