Quill Lake is located about 19 miles ESE of International Falls, MN. The lake is 85 acres and generally deep; only 27 percent is less than 15 feet deep. Several species of sportfish were present in 2015. Largemouth Bass trap-net abundance was above the expected range for this lake type and above the level found in the previous investigation. Length in trap nets ranged from 6.0-15.4 inches and the average was 12.5. The average weight was within the expected range for this lake type. Five year-classes were sampled and age ranged from 2-8 years. The 2008 year-class was the strongest and represented 50% of the sample. Growth was similar to the area and statewide averages. Only one Northern Pike was captured; it was 44.5 inches and 18.1 pounds. Clearly, Quill Lake has the ability to produce giganitic Northern Pike. A few Pumpkinseed and Rock Bass were also captured during this investigation. Yellow Perch were not captured during this investigation, but they have been captured in the past.
