Hartley Pond has a surface area of 11-acres, is 100% littoral and has a maximum depth of 7 feet. The lake is located entirely within the City of Duluth and Hartley Park. Hartley Pond can be accessed by portaging 0.25 miles across a trail that originates at the parking lot of the Hartley Nature Center. Shore fishing is possible from the face of the dam and from the northeast and southeast shores. A full survey (trapnets only) was conducted during the summer and fall of 2009 to update information aquatic habitat and fish populations. Yearling brown trout were stocked in most years from 1989 through 2008. Beginning in 2009 brown trout were stocked into Tischer Creek below Hartley Pond, instead of in the pond. Stocking location was changed due to high summer water tempertures. No brown trout were captured during the 2009 lake survey. Yellow perch catch rates for standard and double-pot (special) trapnets of 1.0 and 6.5 per lift was similar to the 2004 investigation (2.0-1.7). The catch rate for standard trapnets was considered typical compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Mean length of yellow perch sampled in standard trapnets was 6.4 inches. Length at age-2 of 5.8 inches represented fast growth compared to other Duluth Area populations. Age analysis revealed four year-classes represented from 2002 through 2008, with a strong 2007 year-class. Only two largemouth bass were sampled during the 2004 investigation. Largemouth bass standard and special trapnet catch rates were 0.3 and 2.0 in 2009 and a total of eight bass were sampled from all gear types. Mean length of bass sampled by special trapnet was 7.2 inches. Age analysis revealed no bass older than age-2 and all but one were recruited from the 2007 year-class. Pumpkinseed sunfish standard trapnet catch rate of 7.3 per lift had declined since 2004 (12.2) but special trapnet catch rate of 37.5 per lift had increased (8.0). Pumpkinseed mean length was 4.2 inches. Black bullhead standard and special trapnet catch rates of 1.0 and 11.5 per lift had declined since 2004 (7.5 and 48.7). Mean length of bullhead sampled by special trapnet of 8.0 inches had increased since 2004 (5.0). White sucker standard trapnet catch rate of 7.3 per lift had declined since 2004 (13.0) and had fallen to within what was considered typical compared to other Minnesota lakes of similar type. Conversely, special trapnet catch rate had increased from 28.7 per lift in 2004 to 47.0 in 2009. White sucker mean length from standard trrapnets of 12.8 inches had increased since 2004 (8.7). Other fish species sampled include bluegill and golden shiner. Bluegill were not sampled during the 2004 investigation. Information was collected on aquatic vegetation, substrate and water quality. Diversity of aquatic plants was low with 20 species or species groups identified along 10 transects. However, density was high, with water marigold identified as abundant at 100% of the transects and cattail, coontail, floating-leaf pondweed and lesser duckweed identified at 90% of the transects. Five other plant species were identified at greater than 60% of the transects. Muck, which was identified at 100% of the transects, was the most abundant substrate type. All other substrate types were rated as rare with percent occurrence of 20 or less. Results of laboratory water analysis indicate Hartley Pond is a slightly alkaline (pH 7.8), moderately hard water lake (alkalinity 107 ppm) with moderate fertility (total phosphorus 0.028 ppm).
