Jeffer's Pond is an 11-acre pond in Prior Lake (Scott County) with a maximum depth of 70 feet. The pond is on a 200-acre conservation easement bequest by Bob Jeffers for whom it is named. Jeffer's Elementary (Prior Lake/Savage Schools) is on the property which also includes maintained walking trails and a boardwalk/pier that provides nature observation and shore fishing opportunities. This water became part of Fishing in the Neighborhood (FiN) program in 2015 and a Standard Survey was conducted in July 2016, the first survey following FiN designation. Bluegill were captured in trap nets at 8.8 fish per lift, a value below average for Lake Class. Bluegill ranged from 3.35-5.28 inches in length. Average weight per individual was 0.06 pounds, a number well below average for Bluegill of the same Lake Class. Black Crappie were sampled at 13.5 fish per lift in gillnets, a value above average for lakes in the same class, but were captured at a rate of 1.6 fish per lift in trap nets, a value below average for lake class. Most Black Crappie sampled were in the 4-4.99 inch range with 1 individual greater than 10 inches, and were well-below average in size and weight across gear types for lakes of the same class. Black Bullhead was the most abundant species sampled at 2.5 fish per gillnet lift, a value above average for Lake Class, and 22.2 fish per lift in lake trap nets, a value well above average for Lake Class. Black Bullheads were between 5.35-10.00 inches in length for gillnets and 4.41-10.91 inches in length for lake trap nets. Other fish sampled included Yellow Perch, Pumpkinseed, Green Sunfish, Yellow Bullhead, Golden Shiner, Common Carp, and Goldfish. Future management may include stocking Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, and Channel Catfish for fishing and potential measures to control Black Bullhead abundance and Common Carp spawning in Jeffer's Pond. Through the FiN Program, urban fishing is easily provided to youth and families in the Prior Lake/Savage area.
