Lake George (29-0216-00) is an 825.72-acre lake with a maximum depth of 29 feet located near Lake George, MN. Park Rapids Fisheries staff conducted a survey targeting near shore fish species on July 10 and 11, 2024, to assess populations of non-game and small sport fish. Fourteen 100-foot sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake shore, sampling a variety of habitat types. Each site was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot 1/8th-inch mesh seine, depending on habitat conditions. During this assessment, six sites were sampled with a 15-foot seine and four sites were sampled with a 50-foot seine. Backpack electrofishing was done at all 14 sites. Nearshore sampling captured 12 species of fish including two species intolerant of disturbance; Banded Killifish, and Blackchin Shiner. Other species sampled during the nearshore effort included Bluegill, Bluntnose Minnow, Brook Stickleback, Central Mudminnow, Green Sunfish, Hybrid Sunfish, Largemouth Bass, Pumpkinseed, Spottail Shiner, and Yellow Perch. Nearshore catches will be used along with gill net and trap net catch data from a standard fisheries survey conducted on June 17, 2024 to calculate a fish-based Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) score, which is indicative of the health of Lake George. This survey is contributing to a watershed assessment process in coordination with MN Pollution Control Agency. Kabekona Lake is located in the Upper Mississippi River/Headwaters Watershed.

Lake George is located in north-central Hubbard County, next to the town of Lake George. Lake George has a surface area of 826 acres and a maximum depth of 29 feet. A DNR-owned public access with a concrete ramp is located on the northwest shore of the lake, just off County Road 4. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different types based on physical and chemical characteristics. Lake George is in Lake Class 27. Lake Class 27 lakes are generally very large, deep, hard water lakes, with very regularly shaped shoreline. Other area lakes in this same classification include Garfield, Fish Hook, and Upper Bottle. Lake George is a popular fishing lake and supports good populations of Walleye, Northern Pike, Largemouth Bass, and Panfish. Lake George has good water quality and excellent fish habitat of submerged and emergent vegetation such as hard stem bulrush. Lake George has protected slot length limit regulations in place for both Northern Pike and Largemouth Bass. The Northern Pike slot length limit regulation is 24 to 36 inches while the Largemouth Bass in 14 to 20 inches. Only one Northern Pike or Largemouth Bass above the slot length limit is allowed in possession. Walleye abundance has remained stable the past several years on Lake George. Good numbers of Walleye between 14 to 18 inches were sampled with fish measuring up to 26.4 inches. Yellow Perch, an important forage species for Walleye were sampled in low numbers. Most Yellow Perch were 5 - 7 inches, with some fish up to 10 inches. Northern Pike were sampled in high numbers in Lake George. Historically Northern Pike abundance has been high and dominated by small sizes. Sampled Northern Pike had an average length and weight of 22.4 inches and 2.7 pounds, with fish measured up to 34.8 inches. The proportion of larger size Northern Pike (greater than 28.0 inches) has increased slowly in Lake George since the implementation of the protected slot length limit regulation. Lake George supports an abundant Largemouth Bass population and anglers will find good numbers of bass in the 12 to 15 inch size range, with fish measured up to 18.8 inches. The goal of the current protected slot length limit regulation is to increase the proportion of larger bass (> 15.0 inches). Good water quality, aquatic vegetation cover, and spawning substrate provide excellent habitat for Largemouth Bass in Lake George. Lake George supports a popular Panfish fishery composed of Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, and Black Crappie. Anglers will find good numbers of Bluegill and Pumpkinseed in the 6-8inch size range. Present and past surveys have shown the Black Crappie population in Lake George to fluctuate from low to moderate numbers for this lake class. Other species sampled included: Brown and Yellow Bullhead; Green Sunfish; Hybrid Sunfish; Rock Bass and White Sucker. Currently faucet snails, an aquatic invasive species (AIS) have been identified in Lake George. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants or animals from their watercraft and drain all water from their boat before leaving the access.

Lake George (29-0216-00) is a 825.72-acre lake with a maximum depth of 29 feet located in Lake George, MN. Park Rapids Fisheries staff conducted a survey targeting near shore fish species on July 24, 2019 to assess populations of non-game and small sport fish. Fourteen 100-foot sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake shore, sampling a variety of habitat types. Each site was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot 1/8th-inch mesh seine, depending on habitat conditions. During this assessment, three sites were sampled with a 50-foot seine and five sites were sampled with a 15-foot seine. Site conditions prevented the use of seines at six sites. Backpack electrofishing was done at all 14 sites, several of which were conducted from the side of the boat. . Nearshore sampling captured thirteen species of fish including one species intolerant of disturbance; Banded Killifish. Other species sampled during the nearshore effort included Bluegill, Bluntnose Minnow, Central Mudminnow, Green Sunfish, Hybrid Sunfish, Iowa Darter, Johnny Darter, Largemouth Bass, Pumpkinseed, Spottail Shiner, Yellow Bullhead, and Yellow Perch. Nearshore catches will be used along with gill net and trap net catch data from a standard fisheries survey conducted on June 17, 2019, to calculate a fish-based Index of Biotic Integrity (IBI) score, which is indicative of the health of Lake George. This survey is contributing to a watershed assessment process in coordination with MN Pollution Control Agency. Lake George is located in the Crow Wing River Watershed.
