A reduced daily bag limit on sunfish (10 fish daily) was enacted on Indian Lake (Wright County) beginning March 1, 2021. To evaluate the effectiveness of this regulation and to monitor size structure in the Bluegill population, targeted Bluegill assessments were conducted on Indian Lake in 2017, 2021, and 2025. Targeted surveys using trap nets around spawning time provide a more accurate picture of Bluegill abundance and size structure than standard summer surveys. In 2017, 472 Bluegill were caught ranging from 3.0 to 10.0 inches, with an average length of 6.6 inches. Proportional Stock Density (PSD) was 59 and Relative Stock Density of 8-inch fish (RSD-8) was 32. In 2021, just prior to the new regulation, 355 Bluegill were captured with lengths ranging from 3.0 to 9.3 inches (average length 6.8 inches). PSD was 76 and RSD-8 was 15, indicating a higher proportion of quality-sized fish (?6 inches) and a moderate percentage of larger fish (?8 inches). The most recent targeted survey was conducted May 5-7, 2025, and captured 968 Bluegill, ranging in length from 3.0 to 9.1 inches with an average length of 5.5 inches. The catch rate of 48.4 Bluegill per net was strong for this lake class, suggesting high relative abundance. The length frequency was dominated by 4.0-7.5-inch fish , with some larger individuals up to 9 inches. In 2025, PSD was 44 and RSD-8 was 1. Compared to prior surveys, the 2025 results indicate sustained recruitment and high overall abundance, but with a notable shift toward smaller size fish. The sampling in 2025 was notably earlier than the 2021 survey (May 24-25). Early May 2025 in central Minnesota featured variable spring conditions-warm spells interspersed with cooler periods-with shallow lake water temperatures still in the low-to-mid 50s°F range on those dates. Large males may not have fully colonized spawning areas, explaining the observed drop in the PSD and RSD-8 values compared to 2021 and 2017 (76/15 in 2021 and 59/32 in 2017, respectively). The length distribution (dominated by 4.0-7.5 inches) reflects strong recruitment of younger age groups but likely an under-representation of the largest males due to pre-spawn timing rather than a fundamental decline in population quality. Other panfish collected in 2025 included 137 Pumpkinseed (3.4 to 8.1 inches, average 6.0 inches), 49 Hybrid Sunfish (3.9 to 8.7 inches, average 5.9 inches), and 2 Green Sunfish (4.2-5.7 inches). Black Crappie were abundant, with a total of 350 captured ranging from 4.2 to 13.7 inches (average length 8.3 inches). The crappie catch rate of 17.5 fish per net and good representation of fish over 9 inches suggest a healthy population and favorable spawning success in recent years. The 10 fish reduced bag limit's benefits on size structure are best evaluated with surveys timed to comparable thermal cues (e.g., when water reaches 62-68°F at spawning sites) rather than calendar dates alone. When conditions align properly, targeted spawning-period trap netting provides the clearest picture of balanced age/size classes and the protective effects of regulations on large males. Continued monitoring with attention to water temperature data at the time of sampling will help distinguish true population trends from sampling artifacts driven by the timing of spring weather. This approach ensures the Indian Lake panfish fishery's quality is accurately tracked and sustained long-term.

A reduced daily bag limit on sunfish (10 fish daily) was enacted on Indian Lake beginning March 1, 2021. In order to collect additional pre regulation data, a targeted Bluegill assessment was conducted on Indian Lake from May 24-25, 2021. Targeted surveys using trap nets around spawning time can give a more accurate picture of Bluegill abundance and size structure than standard surveys conducted later in the summer. A total of 358 Bluegill were caught; lengths ranged from 3 - 9 inches with an average length of seven inches. For Indian Lake, 76% of Bluegill caught were longer than six inches and 15% were longer than eight inches. Other sunfish species caught included: Twenty-eight Pumpkinseed ranging in length from 5.2 to 8.5 inches with a mean length of seven inches and 20 Hybrid Sunfish ranging in length from 4.1 to 8.5 inches with a mean length of 6.8 inches. Sixty-three Black Crappie were also sampled with lengths ranging from 4.4 to 11.0 inches and a mean length of 8.9 inches. The Bluegill size structure in Indian Lake is excellent compared to many lakes in the Sauk Rapids Management Area. It is hoped that the reduced daily bag limit for sunfish will help redistribute harvest across a larger portion or the season as well as to preserve the size structure that exists in the lake.
