A targeted survey of nearshore fish species in West Lake Sylvia was conducted on July 21, 2025 by Sauk Rapids fisheries staff. Sampling sites were evenly spaced around the lake and each was sampled by backpack electrofishing and seining with a 50-foot or 15-foot seine, where possible. Backpack electrofishing was completed at 12 sampling stations, but two stations were sampled from the boat due to site conditions. Similarly, a 50-foot seine was used to sample four stations, a 15-foot seine was used at eight stations, and site conditions prevented the use of seines at two stations. Nearshore sampling captured 23 species of fish including six species that are intolerant of disturbance (i.e., Banded Killifish, Blackchin Shiner, Blacknose Shiner, Iowa Darter, Least Darter and Rock Bass) and two that are tolerant of disturbance (i.e., Common Carp and Green Sunfish). The nearshore data were combined with trap net and gill net data from a standard survey to describe the fish community and provide a Fish-based IBI (FIBI) score. The FIBI uses fish community data to measure a lake's health, and the types of fish species present can help identify any stressors that may be negatively affecting the lake environment. In Minnesota lakes, certain fish species cannot survive without clean water and a healthy habitat (e.g., Blackchin Shiner and Least Darter), while other species are tolerant of degraded conditions (e.g., Black Bullhead and Common Carp). The FIBI score, composed of several fish community diversity and composition metrics, indicates the overall health of a lake by comparing it to what is expected for a healthy lake. For additional information on the FIBI, search for "lake index of biological integrity" on the mndnr.gov website. Data from this survey suggests that West Lake Sylvia is in good health as indicated by the FIBI score that exceeds the threshold for aquatic life use determined for similar lakes. Data from this survey will contribute biological information about the health of the fish community to the North Fork Crow River Watershed assessment process in coordination with MN Pollution Control Agency.

Reduced bag limits for sunfish (10 fish daily) and crappie (5 fish daily) were introduced for West Sylvia Lake beginning March 1, 2021. A targeted panfish (sunfish and crappie) assessment was conducted on West Lake Sylvia from May 12-15, 2025, to collect post regulation data. A total of 494 Bluegill were caught; lengths ranged from 4 to 10 inches with an average length of 8 inches. Ninety-four percent of the Bluegill sampled were 6 inches or longer with 46% being 8 inches or longer. Bluegill growth was similar to the Sauk Rapids Area average, reaching 6 inches between 5 and 6 years of age. Only 39 Black Crappie were caught on West Sylvia, compared to 179 caught in the pre regulation survey from 2021. Lengths ranged from 6 to 14 inches with an average length of 12 inches. The lower catch rate may have been due to the later date of the survey in 2025 compared to 2021 (April 26-30). A total of 541 Pumpkinseed Sunfish were caught, which is over 10 times as many as were caught in 2021 (53). Lengths ranged from 6 to 9 inches with an average length of 7 inches. The Hybrid Sunfish catch for 2025 (204) was higher compared to 2021 (136) with lengths ranging from 5 to 9 inches and an average length of 8 inches. Bluegill grow slowly in the Sauk Rapids Area, taking over 8 years to reach 8 inches. We encourage anglers to limit their harvest of larger Bluegill (> 8 inches) and keep smaller fish for a meal to help prevent stunted populations of small fish and keep larger Bluegill available.

Reduced bag limits on sunfish (10 fish daily) and crappie (5 fish daily) were enacted on West Sylvia Lake beginning March 1, 2021. In order to collect additional pre regulation data, a targeted Bluegill and Black Crappie assessment was conducted on West Lake Sylvia from April 26 - 30, 2021. Two hundred ninety Bluegill were caught on West Sylvia; lengths also ranged from 4 - 10 inches but averaged 8 inches. On West Sylvia 94% of the Bluegill sampled were greater than six inches and 40% were greater than eight inches in length. These results are above average for both fish greater than six inches and eight inches. One hundred seventy-nine crappies were caught on West Sylvia; lengths ranged from 5 - 12 inches and averaged 10 inches. For West Sylvia Lake, 96% of the crappie caught were eight inches or longer while 47% of the catch were 10 inches or longer. Fifty-three Pumpkinseed Sunfish were caught on West Sylvia and ranged from 5 -9 inches in length and averaged 7 inches; 136 Hybrid Sunfish were also caught and ranged in length from 5- 9 inches, with an average length of 8 inches. The size structures of Bluegill and Black Crappie in West Sylvia Lakes are above average compared to many lakes in the Sauk Rapids Management Area. It is hoped that the reduced daily bag limits for sunfish and crappie will help redistribute harvest across a larger portion of the season as well as to preserve the size structures that exists in the lake.
