Lake Four is a small lake located approximately 3 miles southwest of the city of Aitkin. The lake has a surface area of 36 acres with a maximum depth of around 22 feet. The water is light brown in color with a secchi disc reading of 6.5 feet. The 1.5 miles of lakeshore is primarily in private ownership aside from a small parcel of recently county tax forfeited land, where access was gained through an unimproved trail on the east side of the lake. Development is minimal and the shoreline is in a mostly natural state. This is the initial survey conducted on this lake, which includes information on the fish populations, water quality, vegetation and substrates. The fish community based on our netting found seven species present including Northern Pike, Black Crappie, Yellow Perch, Bluegill, Pumpkinseed, Hybrid Sunfish and Largemouth Bass. The Northern Pike catch rate based on 1 gill net was 7/net. The size structure was good for a small lake with fish ranging from 20.3" to 28.5" with an average length of 25.2". Five of the 7 pike sampled were larger than 25 inches. One Black Crappie, 1 Yellow Perch and 1 Pumpkinseed were also caught in this gill net. Trap nets produced a catch rate for Bluegill of 31.4/net. The size structure was average with a mean size of 5.6" and 6% longer than 7". Only one Bluegill was longer than 8". Black Crappie appeared more susceptible to trap nets, as is the case in some lakes, and were caught at a rate of 16.9/net. The size structure was good with fish ranging from 5.6"-14.6" and an average size of 7.8". Growth rates for Black Crappie and Bluegill were good. Yellow Perch and Pumpkinseed were caught at rates of 5.8/trap net and 5.4/trap net respectively. Hybrid Sunfish, Northern Pike and Largemouth Bass were also sampled in low numbers.
