Long Lake (DOW# 11-0142; Lake Class 25) is a 1007-acre lake with 15.96 miles of shoreline and a maximum depth of 115 feet located near Longville, MN. A DNR owned public access is located on the northwest shore. The DNR has classified Minnesota's lakes into 43 different classes based on physical, chemical and other characteristics. Long Lake is in Lake Class 25; lakes in this class are deep, clear, and irregularly shaped lakes. Other area lakes in this class include Blackwater, Howard, Inguadona and Girl. The lake is primarily managed for Largemouth Bass, Black Crappie and Bluegill. Secondarily for Northern Pike, Tullibee (Cisco) and Yellow Perch. Long Lake is a good multi-species lake with potential to produce trophy-sized fish. No Rainbow Trout were sampled in the 2025 survey and trout management was discontinued in 2024 after stockings failed to produce a fishery. Largemouth Bass were abundant with fish from 5 to 18 inches sampled; management goals are based on spring electrofishing which was not conducted in 2025. Black Crappie were sampled at moderate levels with fish from 5 to 11 inches sampled. Goals for the Black Crappie population are based on spring trap netting which was not conducted in 2025. Bluegill were sampled at low levels with fish from 4 to 8 inches sampled. Size structure goals for Bluegill were met however; abundance goals were not. Northern Pike were caught at moderate levels with fish from 10 to 36 inches sampled. Northern Pike management goals were partially met and size structure improved from the 2021 survey. Tullibee (Cisco) were caught at moderate levels with fish ranging from 15 to 17 inches. Yellow Perch were sampled in very low numbers, and the catch was below the management goal. The Walleye catch rate remained low despite recent increased stocking efforts. Walleye ranged in length from 12 to 29 inches. Other fish species sampled in Long Lake include Brown Bullhead, Hybrid Sunfish, Yellow Bullhead, Pumpkinseed, and Rock Bass. People can have significant impacts on lakes and the fish populations they support. Harvest, lakeshore development, removal of shoreline vegetation, and introductions of invasive species can all adversely affect fish populations. Currently, no aquatic invasive species (AIS) have been identified in Long Lake. AIS are moved from infested to non-infested waters by anglers, boaters, and lake shore owners and can adversely impact lakes and fish populations. To avoid spreading AIS, lake users are required to remove all aquatic plants or animals from their watercraft and drain all water from their boat before leaving the access. If you suspect an infestation of an invasive species in this lake, save a specimen and report it to a local natural resource office. Additional information on all of these topics can be found on the DNR website (www.dnr.state.mn.us) or by contacting the Walker Area Fisheries office.

Black Crappie were caught at moderate levels with fish from 5 to 12 inches sampled. Goals for the Black Crappie population are based on spring trap netting which was not conducted in 2021. Bluegill were caught at low levels with fish from 3 to 9 inches sampled. The Bluegill catch did not meet the management goals. Northern Pike were caught at moderate levels with fish from 9 to 34 inches sampled. Northern Pike were just over the management goal for abundance in this survey. Tullibee (Cisco) were caught at moderate levels with fish ranging from 13 to 16 inches. The Tullibee (Cisco) catch met the management goal. Few Yellow Perch were sampled and the catch was below the management goal; perch ranged from 6 to 10 inches in length. Few Walleye were also sampled and lengths ranged from 12 to 25 inches. Other fish species that anglers can expect to encounter include Brown Bullhead, Hybrid Sunfish, Yellow Bullhead, Pumpkinseed and Rock Bass. Minnesota DNR Fisheries Area staff conducted an assessment of lakeshore habitat on Long Lake on Jun 26 2020, following the Score the Shore survey protocols. The assessment consisted of 62 survey sites evenly spaced 400 meters around the lake. Assessments were made in three habitat zones: Shoreline Zone (the shore-water interface to the top of the natural bank), Shoreland Zone (land-ward from shoreline to development structure or 100 feet), and Aquatic Zone (lake-ward 50 feet of shoreline). The average lakewide habitat score was 71.3 (+/- 3.6) out of 100 possible. Approximately 50 percent of the sites were developed with a mean score of 49.7 (+/- 4.6), while undeveloped sites had a mean score of 92.8 (+/- 1.3).
