Jointly managed by the MnDNR's Fishing in the Neighborhood Program and the city of Eagan, Schwanz Lake is a 13-acre, class 40 lake located in Eagan. Trapp Farm Park borders approximately half of the shoreline and provides numerous amenities including a playground, picnic area, and fishing pier. The sport fish community consists of black crappie, bluegill, hybrid sunfish, largemouth bass, pumpkinseed sunfish, and yellow perch. Largemouth bass were the only predator sampled during the survey. Because fisheries managers cannot rely on trap and gill nets to properly sample largemouth bass, electrofishing was conducted in spring while the bass were in the shallows. The abundant bass population primarily consisted of fish less than 12.0 inches. Bluegills, black crappies, and yellow perch were sampled in varying numbers. Of the 431 bluegills sampled using trap nets, approximately 39 and 84% of fish sampled were above 7.0 and 6.5 inches, respectively. The abundant bluegill population primarily consisted of fast growing age-4 fish (81% of aged bluegills). Because no bluegills were sampled during the 1987 survey, adult bluegills have been stocked intermittently since 1988. Black crappies were sampled in moderate numbers. Approximately 16% of the sampled crappies were above 8.0 inches, with no fish exceeding 9.5 inches. Yellow perch catch rates were moderately low when compared to other Minnesota class 40 lakes. The largest perch measured approximately 9.0 inches. Low numbers of pumpkinseed and hybrid sunfish averaging 6.2 inches were sampled in both gill and trap nets. Sampled in low numbers, eight trap netted black bullheads averaged 10.6 inches and 0.5 pounds.
