Snelling Gravel Pits are located in the Minnesota River flood plain and water levels and fish populations change with flooding events. During the 1994 survey three of the four gravel pit basins were connected together, and the other was connected by a small outlet channel.Black crappie and northern pike were the most common game fish species sampled. Black crappie were sampled in high numbers; however, average size was small (6.2 inches). Black crappie up to 9.9 inches in length were sampled.Snelling Gravel Pits has a moderate level of northern pike (4.5/gillnet). Northern pike up to 30 inches were sampled, with 40% of the catch between 25 to 30 inches in length.Bluegill were sampled in moderate numbers (13.0/trapnet). Bluegill were measured up to 7.6 inches, with 12% of the catch exceeding 7 inches. One walleye and one largemouth bass were sampled, and were 12.5 and 14.1 inches in length, respectively.Black and yellow bullhead were sampled in low numbers, but were of large size (10 to 12 inches). The following species were sampled in low numbers: gizzard shad, carp, bigmouth buffalo, yellow perch, hybrid sunfish, and white sucker. The south basin of Snelling Gravel Pits has cold water temperatures from spring flow, but low dissolved oxygen readings were found. Dissolved oxygen was below 1 ppm at depths greater than four feet. Minimum acceptable oxygen levels for most warm water game fish is 3 ppm.

Black bullhead, and white crappie were found at levels above the local median numbers. Bowfin, gizzard shad, carp, brown bullhead, yellow bullhead, northern pike, yellow perch, walleye, green sunfish, pumpkinseed, bluegill, black crappie and hybrid sunfish were all found at levels below the local median numbers. Largemouth bass young-of-the-year and adults were also sampled.Management RecommendationsThe Snelling Gravel Pits are located within the boundary of Fort Snelling State Park, thus providing Access. It's location in the Minnesota River floodplain presumes periodic inundation by the river, creating difficult fish management. Water discharge to the gravel pits from inlet #1 should be diverted. A parking area, with the possibility of a boat ramp for basins #3 and #4 should be constructed.Management for stream trout man be feasible after establishment of a fish barrier and rehabilitation. A hypolymnetic aerator may be necessary. A population assessment should be conducted in 1988.
